frequently asked questions

FOR www.win-this-home.com ESSAY CONTEST

Q. What about the contest extension?
A. The contest has been extended until May 31st. The goal of 3000 entries has not been achieved and this additional period will allow all those folks that have not had the opportunity to visit our open house and/or enter to do so. The addition of the home tour video has been an asset but in speaking to those who have seen it and toured the house it was an appetizer.

Q. What are the tax consequences of winning the house?
A. The winner(s) all get an IRS form 1099 listing the value of the prize. In the case of the house, it is the transfer price that the contest buys the home from my wife and I for, $575,000.00. Each and everyone have a different tax situation and should consult a professional tax authority just as winners of any prize should.

Q. Are there any related real estate costs or fees associated with winning the house?
A. All escrow, closing costs and such will be paid by the contest. There will be no property taxes due.

Q. Can my entry be hand written and/or on a separate sheet?
A. Yes. The restrictions are all entries must be legible and in English.

Q. Does the theme words “ I/We want to win this home in Yachats because..” count in the 100 word limit?
A.  No. Neither does the essay have to start with those words, but that theme must be included within the essay.

Q. What if I lose my assigned entry #?
A. Contact the contest, either at the mailing address, PO Box 245, Yachats, OR 97498 or via the Email link on the web site, win-this-home.com with your name and address as it appeared on your entry.

Q. How can I/we see the inside of the house?
A. We hold an open house every Sat and Sun, 10AM-4PM.

Q. Why was the original date of the contest extended to April 30th?
A. The extremely bad weather was the main reason. Too many folks wanted to see the house and couldn’t make it to the Coast.

Q. What about the judges? Who are they and where did you find them?
A. Finding and hiring the judges was the most difficult part getting the
Contest together. The judges are all retired educators with over 30 years of experience, mostly in English and/or literature. The names of the judges will not be disclosed for obvious reasons. None are residents of Yachats.

Q. What about details regarding you and the Corporation, win-this-home.com, Inc?
A. The corporation is registered with the State of Oregon and information is available on the State web site. I am the sole owner and stockholder. Personal information has been vetted in numerous newspaper articles. My wife and I have been full time residents in Yachats for over 11 years.

Q. Why are the entries not reflective of the publicity?
A. The very same question I ask myself every day. I was not sure so I inquired of some professional folks via the Internet. The “wizards” tell me that, 1) most entrants rewrite their entries at least 3 times, often much more before entering, 2) many prospective entrants feel that they may fall short of what the judges are looking for. The judges and I say not so. This is NOT AN ENGLISH EXAM! This is someone’s feelings or desire as to why they should win the house. The judges do not have a preconception of what will win the contest and all three read and rank each entry. Their combined ranking is only known to me on my master log and then only as a #, no names are used in the contest.

After all entries have been judged the judge will revisit the top ranked entries once again to finally decide on the winner(s), then it’s still only as a #. At that time I will consult the master entry list to find the matching name(s).
